Whose I Am

March 20

Read Ephesians 5:1-9

Pray: Almighty God— help me to remember whose I am and may my words, passions and deeds be marked in that way. Amen.

Hear:

Have you ever been around a pet that is just wild? They don’t listen, they bark like crazy, and generally just aren’t very good? You might feel that way if you met my dog. Fatty Lumpkin used to be a great dog and now he’s just kind of a rude roommate. Here’s the reality— I can blame the dog, but if I spent more time training him, he’d probably be a good bit sweeter.

You see a pet’s actions are a reflection of the owner. Whose they are is reflected by who they are. In this analogy, I will basically be calling you a puppy, but hang in there. When we act out, use unkind words, when we treat others as a nuisance, we are reflecting whose we are.

Our passage today is calling us to reflect whose we are in all that we do. We are called to treat the world around us as if we have changed ownership and are no longer run by a world that treats the marginalized in an unkind way. Instead, we need to reflect that we are run by a God of great kindness and gentleness. We need to see the world and all that is within it as a chance for us to show the love that has been given us by God.

Respond:

How will you show the world whose you are?

Meditation:

I am a child of God.
