Not My Words

March 18

Read John 7: 14-18

Pray: Almighty Jesus, help me to speak your words and to do your deeds. Amen.

Hear:

Here’s the thing— as a Christian, I think that I could do pretty well to run the world. I’ve got some ideas and I think if people just listened to me, everything would be a whole lot easier. Better yet, let’s get a crown and everyone can put it on my head, just so people know who is in charge.

Anyone else feel as if we’ve got the best worldview out there? This passage is so helpful for me because it reminds me that whenever that still small voice in my head starts talking about power, prestige, and running stuff, I can know for certain that I am not listening to the voice of God. I can know for certain that instead, I am looking out for me.

Today, maybe we could really scrutinize our motivations. Maybe we could really examine why we are correcting our children a certain way or how we respond to our spouse. What if we sought out our motivations before big decisions or little responses? I wonder if then, the one who should be in charge would be a bit more in charge.

Respond:

Why am I doing what I am doing?

Meditation:

Who’s in charge?
