More Than You Would Think

December 4

Read Jeremiah 1:6-10

Pray: Holy Spirit— help me to see myself as you see me. Help me to know that I am filled with a power greater than my own. Amen.

Hear:

There is this dangerous practice among Christians where we take scripture that was written to and about certain characters and apply it to our own lives with relative abandon. It is not unlike reading a comic book and assuming that when they say, “Spiderman,” they actually mean, “me.” There are passages that talk about plans to give you an increase and to make you a great and wondrous people and though they sound very nice, they were not written to hang on your mantle.

Our passage today can easily become like this. Let’s tread lightly and see what universal message lie within.

It is plain to see (I believe) that the passage we are reading today is testifying to a superpowered being— God. God has this ability to take who we are and turn us into something else. Jeremiah says he talks like a baby and God says, “yeah, but I am sending you—I am filling you up. I got this (my paraphrase).”

You see, this isn’t some sort of “you can do it, don’t give up,” cat poster—no, this is a mighty call to action. God is telling Jeremiah, “yes, I know you don’t have it— but I do.” So our challenge is not to see God calling us like God called Jeremiah, but rather to see the specific way that we are called.

So, what is your superpower?

Respond:

I am not Spiderman. I am more than I would think.

Meditation:

What is my superpower?
